Instagram Direct, A new Standalone Messaging App

Instagram is currently testing a new messaging app called Direct. This messaging app is designed to replace the messaging feature on Instagram app.

What this means is that, the messaging feature on Instagram app will be removed and become an app of its own called Direct which was previously a part of the main Instagram app.

The app is currently available today in six countries: Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay, on both, iOS and Android. There's no official statement on when the app would be available globally.

Like Snapchat, Direct opens up in the camera view, letting you quickly snap a picture or record a video and send it to someone. You can swipe left and go to your Inbox on the right or swipe right and go to your app settings. Apparently if you keep swiping left from your inbox, you will see the Instagram logo and are then sent to the Instagram app. Similarly, if you swipe right in the main Instagram app you will be sent to the Direct app.

I still don't know why Instagram has to do this. As we all know that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO already own Whatsapp messenger and Facebook messenger, and now it's Instagram Direct. Anyway, it's not bad. Hopefully, it might soon be available globally.
