WhatsApp's Latest Update Causes a Rise in Users Leaving the Platform

Social media moderators have observed that there is more and more increment in the number of people abandoning their WhatsApp accounts. This became apparent following the change in the social platform’s Terms and Conditions

WhatsApp, having over 2 billion users around the globe, informed its users of the changes earlier this week which then caused this trend of people disengaging.

The alarming updates concerning sharing data from the app with its parent platform, Facebook, made many users feel that their person details may be compromised. What also stirred up this decision for people to abandon their account was based on WhatsApp's initial pledge of never applying such conditions or policies.

Originally, billions of the app’s users received notification regarding WhatsApp warning them to accept the new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy by 8th of February, otherwise lose access to their accounts. So, this basically left users no choice but to move to other popular messengers like Telegram and Signal

Although the data collection doesn’t involve messages or calls made on the app, it includes sharing personal information users used to set up their accounts alongside their device models and IP addresses. According to the FAQ page, WhatsApp explains that the policy update doesn’t affect the privacy of messages sent or received from one’s contact in any way.

Currently, the app has extended the date to 15th of May for users to review the changes more fully before deciding to keep or forfeit their accounts.
